The transnational project group carrying out DEMIFER is led by the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI, The Netherlands) and includes the University of Vienna (UNIVIE, Austria), the International Organization for Migration/Central European Forum for Migration and Population Research (IOM/CEFMR, Poland), the University of Leeds/School of Geography (United Kingdom), the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL, The Netherlands), the Nordic Centre for Spatial Development (Nordregio, Sweden), and IRPPS-CNR.
DEMIFER (“Demographic and migratory flows affecting European regions and cities”) is an ESPON 2013 applied research project (European Spatial Planning Network http://www.espon.eu/). The objective of DEMIFER is to assess the effects of demographic trends (low fertility, low mortality, population ageing) and interregional and international migration flows on European regions and cities. The specific aims are to assess future changes in population growth, the size of the labour force and the ageing of the population, and to explore policy options aiming at regional competitiveness and territorial cohesion. Possible effects of climate change are considered.
