The migration phenomenon is experienced to a large extent through voice, written texts and, above all, to images, fixed and in motion. As products of the cultural industry, images affect both the individual experience and the cultural reproduction of society, in a continuous tension between filtering, retaining and transmitting, inducing an emotional involvement that is difficult to be indiced by written texts. By condensing the stories of migrant men and women, images have the power to arouse memories, projects, experiences, to draw closer but also to distance, disgust, and terrify.
On the occasion of the publication of the book “Imago migrantis: migrants at the doors of Europe in the age of the media” (CNR-IRPPS e-publishing), the Institute for Research on Population and Social Policies of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR- IRPPS) organized, in collaboration with the Elena and Claudio Cerasi Foundation and Coopculture, a meeting for reflecting on the representation of migrants in the media images, which took place at Palazzo Merulana in Rome on June 26 2019. Images of migrants taken from online newspapers and textbooks, analyzed and proposed by CNR-IRPPS, were projected and discussed alongside excerpts from the film “Fuocoammare” by Gianfranco Rosi, Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2016 , in an ideal dialogue aimed at questioning their role: instrument for construction of political and cultural consensus, but also for cultural resistance. The meeting speakers were the editors of the book Adriana Valente, Valentina Tudisca and Andrea Pelliccia (CNR-IRPPS), the director of RAI Ragazzi Luca Milano and the movie director Gianfranco Rosi.
Luca Attanasio, Gianluca Falcitelli, Carlo Giordano, Alba L’Astorina, Camilla Pagani participated in the debate.
