Innovation for global challenges in a connected world: the role of local resources and socio-economic conditions
June 2020 – December 2023
This project aims at investigating the role of innovation and technological change in facing selected major global societal challenges. In particular it addresses the conditions for a new economic recovery in a world context characterized by increasing competition and environmental fragility.
The project will seek to answer research questions concerning some global challenges that call for innovative responses:
i) How innovation in new areas and industries could provide a viable strategy to overcome the recent economic crises and guarantee economic development. Is there a potential new techno-economic paradigm and how can companies, industries and nations get ready for it?
ii) What is the impact of the international diffusion of emerging technologies, including the green and the digital, on the evolution of the links amongst industries in global value chains across countries? How can these links be fostered to achieve better responses on climate change and other substantial socio-economic objectives?
iii) The interplay between green and digital technologies in the transition towards sustainable and more inclusive production modes. Can these new technologies lead to greater social inclusion?
iv) The impact of technological change and international diffusion of technologies in addressing the challenge of climate change and the connected extreme events. How can adverse events be addressed and mitigated?
