WORTHY INVESTIGATION

The survey Deserving, created in collaboration with the University of Roma Tre, intends to contribute to the critical understanding of the different meanings of the concept of merit in the Italian school context through the pursuit of two specific objectives:

  • explore the individual meanings of the concept of merit and the meritocratic beliefs of teachers and managers;
  • analyze How opinions on the meritocracy-education binomial translate into teaching, evaluation and organizational practices in the school environment.

The survey Deserving adopts a holistic and interdisciplinary approach and is divided into two phases. The first, of a qualitative nature, involved conducting in-depth interviews addressed to managers and teachers of Comprehensive Institutes in the city of Rome. The data collected through this activity were preparatory to the realization of the second phase, of a quantitative nature, namely the construction of an electronic survey questionnaire that can be filled in in CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing) mode addressed to managers and teachers of the twelve institutes involved in the activity.

Through the dissemination of the survey results Deserving, starting from representations, experiences and opinions of managers and teachers of the first cycle of education, the project aims to offer a contribution to the debate on the binomial "meritocracy-education", activating a critical reflection on the concept of equal opportunities. The communication activities will therefore be aimed at stimulating a broader reflection on the nature and objectives of today's public school, and at identifying transformative teaching-evaluation practices aimed at containing the weight of ascribed factors (place of birth, gender, family cultural and economic status, etc.) on scholastic paths and results.
