The scientific context
The factor ‘Population’ plays a central role in economic and social structures and dynamics. Population studies serve to answer questions regarding the causes and consequences of past and present demographic structure and change and to foresee and manage future demographic trends. Changes in migration are considered a key element in characterizing industrialized societies and the process of modernization. This holds at the international, as well as at the national, regional and local level. On an international level, bringing together the different facets of mobility to try to build a unified and comprehensive framework of interpretation is one of the most promising paths of research. It is in such a direction that the research activities are organized in order to highlight common features and specificities of the analyzed demographic phenomena.
The project is a combination of the “Population dynamics and governance” and “Mobility and Territory” projects, with the aim of creating a larger research team able to respond more effectively to the demand for knowledge on demographic and migration issues. Such a merger also responds to the need for streamlining the internal organization, given the numerous, established and profitable relationships that have existed for years between the researchers of the two projects. The topics of interest come from the two original projects and apply to all demographic and migration issues. Regarding the first project, we emphasize the study of population dynamics at different territorial levels, their effects on land management and local policies. On the latter, international migration, migration policies, the various aspects of foreign immigration in Italy, the Italian immigration, the phenomenon of internal mobility and the dynamics of urbanization, are emphasized.
The skills available are demographic, geographic, information technology, statistical and sociological.
The research techniques are quantitative, in particular statistical and demographic methods of analysis, and qualitative, with methods typical of sociological analysis
Improvement of the knowledge regarding the dynamics of population structure and dynamics and spatial mobility. Formulation of policy interventions at different levels and by different stakeholders who are interested in the demographic phenomena.
The fundamental objectives of the project are the analysis of the various aspects of population structures and dynamics and migration and the study of the relationship between population and economic, social and geographic processes, in order to provide tools for understanding, interpreting and responding to policy makers (national, international, public and private) at different regional levels interested in demographic phenomena.
