REPOPA – REsearch into POlicy to enhance Physical Activity
REsearch into POlicy to enhance Physical Activity (REPOPA) is a 5 year project within the EU research funded Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) that take place in six European countries (Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, UK, Italy, Romania) and Canada.
REPOPA is part of the programme on ‘Cooperation’, which supports research activities carried out by different research bodies in trans-national cooperation and aims to gain or consolidate leadership in key scientific and technology areas.
The objective of REPOPA is to study how best to base physical activity policy making on research evidence and at the same time take into account the realities of local, regional and national politics, resources and priorities.
The project consists of an initial mapping phase on how are policies developed now, followed by two parallel interventions on how policy making could be done: a) to increase cross-sector collaboration and b) how to include citizens into policy development. The project will conclude by developing and testing best policy making practices and tools.
This kind of research is multi-disciplinary relying on political science, social and behavioral science methods. It is based on the current health promotion approach, which is characterized by equal partnership and collaboration between academics, practitioners and policy makers.
The study has a strongly experimental part, that includes the use of methodologies like content analysis, interviews with policy makers, case-studies and qualitative analysis through different participatory methods (e.g. Policy Delphi).
