The research activity concerns the preparation and trial of methodologies and tools to assess the output of the ‘Città educante’ project. The project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), involves a wide range of partners, consisting of private (small and medium-sized enterprises) and public entities such as, in addition to many CNR institutes, the universities of Trento and Modena-Reggio Emilia. The modes of evaluation adopted differ on the basis of the type of project results considered. In the case of those relating to trials, on sample classes of schools, a counterfactual evaluative analysis is made on the efficacy of the multimedia teaching methodologies devised within the project. Various specifically designed tests are used to check learning, as well as focus groups with the teachers involved. Complex indicators are built, measured and analysed in order to evaluate the IT and multimedia products realized by the various project partners as part of the project. These indicators are acquired both by performing a technical analysis of the created products to check their added value compared to products already present on the market and through in-depth interviews with the project partners following a storytelling approach.
The task of the IRPSS in the ‘Città educante’ project is evaluation. The evaluation model that has been put together and is currently being implemented concerns two dimensions of analysis: the first is the quantitative and qualitative monitoring and counterfactual evaluation of the trial phase of the training tools and teaching methodologies developed within the project in middle and secondary schools in Piedmont and primary schools in Emilia Romagna. This analysis measures the capacity of the interventions implemented to achieve the goals set by the project and the added value in terms of learning of some of the tools created for the trials. The second dimension concerns the evaluative analysis of the quality of the products realized by the project as a whole and consists of calculating the value of a complex indicator. On the basis of the literature used, this indicator is called a house of quality, and it enables the quality of the results obtained to be measured against its potential customers’ expectations.
The training activity included in the ‘Città educante’ project has been temporarily suspended following the CNR’s request to MIUR to stop training. This request was made on 13 June 2016 and is currently awaiting a response from the Ministry.
