The mission of the Research Group is the study of welfare systems and social policies from a sociological approach. The main fields of interest of the Research Group are related both to the study of the functioning and dynamics of the Italian welfare state, and to the analysis of the varieties of national welfare models in a comparative perspective, also by paying attention to the EU context and to the process of shaping of a common European social model.
The sub-unit on Welfare systems and social policies is the originary root of the Research Group and provides the point of reference for the realization of a Report on Welfare State in Italy (a prominent product of the research activity; 10 volumes published since 1995). The sub-unit on Gender and generations investigates the local dimension of welfare policies, also adopting an empirical approach. Two sub-units focus on the emerging issues in restructuring or rebuilding welfare systems in newcomers member States in EU as well as in newly industrialized countries (mainly in the BRIC area). Finally the last sub-unit analyses empirically, with some initial research projects on education, the micro dimensions of welfare state practices by the lens of the processes of knowing and learning in organizations.
