INVFACTOR: YOU TOO CAN BE A GENIUS
In Italy, scientific research is hampered not only by a historical lack of investment but also by the shortage of young people choosing SET disciplines at university and embarking on scientific careers. Capturing and cultivating young talent, in synergy with the world of science and technology, to enter the research system as early as possible is a key objective of national scientific research, to which the Italian National Research Council contributes through “INVFactor: You too can be a genius,” a selection of young Italian talent.
CNR-IRPPS aimed this initiative at “young Italian inventors,” particularly students at technical high schools, to direct, stimulate, and enhance the insights and creative energy acquired during their education. INVFactor represents an important opportunity to provide space and visibility for youth creativity, instilling confidence and value in young people regarding their potential and demonstrating that school is not just about tests and exams, but also technology and innovation.
To reach young people, INVFACTOR involved schools, associations of school heads, teachers, and the students themselves. Many young people registered for the event and submitted materials for their inventions. Based on an evaluation that considered the feasibility and innovativeness of the proposed inventions, the CNR has selected a list of finalists.
The finalists will present their inventions during a dedicated event to be held at the Representation of the European Union in Italy on September 7, 2010. A jury of CNR experts will identify the winners, who will then be invited to “Light’10—Turn on the light on science,” where they will showcase their discoveries and interact with the public and the media in the “Young Talents on Display” area.
