Book Presentation: The Politics of Migrant Labour

  • Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 11.30-13.00
  • Sala Misiti – CNR-IRPPS, via Palestro 32, Rome
  • TEAMS link

As part of the ERC project Illicit Labour and the global photovoltaic industry, Gabriella Alberti (University of Leeds) and Devi Sacchetto (University of Padua) will present their latest book The Politics of Migrant Labour: Exit, Voice, and Social Reproduction (Bristol University Press).

The meeting will be moderated by Riccardo Martinelli (CNR-IRPPS), with contributions from: Lucia Amorosi (Scuola Normale Superiore), Andrea Ciarini (Sapienza University), and Antonio Sanguinetti (CNR-IRPPS).

This book explores the link between labor mobility and international migration from a historical and global perspective. By analyzing the individual and collective actions of migrants, both within and outside trade union organizations, Alberti and Sacchetto offer a new interpretation of the daily mobility of migrant workers, considering it as a creative and vital strategy for social reproduction and labor conflict.

Presentation of the book “Social Classes in Italy Today”

Tuesday, January 21, 2025 – h. 11.30

Sala Misiti – CNR-IRPPS, via Palestro 32, Rome

Teams live link (Passcode: Z8ie9bm2)

Pier Giorgio Ardeni is a professor of Political and Development Economics at the University of Bologna.

(Book and author profile) Social Classes in Italy Today (Editori Laterza) describes the social differences that remain strong and distinct in Italy, where they limit social mobility, access to education, possibilities, and opportunities. Of course, classes are no longer what they once were because professions and lifestyles have changed, but they still exist, even after we were convinced that they had dissolved in our ‘liquid’ society.
These pages, following step by step how the class structure in Italy has evolved and quantifying the weight of various strata and groups as their characteristics and composition change, aim to show how inequalities in income distribution correspond to differences in profession and educational qualifications, and how social structure still influences power relations. The relative weight of classes has varied, and with it their ‘political’ weight within the channels of representation. A book that aims to demonstrate how classes still exist, indeed, and it is from these that we must start again to rethink the crisis of democracy and representation.

How can digital technologies be used in an authentically pedagogical way? How can technology support the educational pathway of students with vulnerabilities?

To discuss this, the Conference will bring together experts from various fields (from pedagogy to computer science) alongside direct involvement of the student community.

The morning sessions offer constructive reflection on the nature of welfare, namely, how to use ICT and AI to overcome social inequalities, provide digital welfare tools to address vulnerabilities and promote shared participation in community empowerment, how to substantiate learning, how to address the relational challenge that the use of AI and ICT is expected to pose, and finally how educational institutions use these tools.

In the afternoon, audiovisual performances are scheduled exploring the relationship between human and artificial, artificial and vulnerability, artificial and art, facilitating the process of emotional and creative learning. The aim is to experiment with educational and training pathways suitable for everyone while respecting their uniqueness, unpredictability and irreproducibility.

A workshop focused on the environment is planned to stimulate imagination regarding possibilities in urban regeneration, along with a participatory workshop on Miro, aimed at promoting design thinking and critical thinking to address environmental and social challenges. Both initiatives aim to demonstrate the effectiveness of technology-based cultural strategies in urban regeneration and the fight against climate change, involving the local community and promoting sustainable territorial development.

The event qualifies as professional development for teachers under MIUR directive 170/2016 (art.1/5).
