Women and Research in SMEs

July 2012–June 2014

Funding Source: ISFOL

The commitment to “smart” growth represents one of the priorities established by the Europe 2020 Strategy for European countries and requires policy actions capable of increasing the competitiveness and efficiency of the production system. In the Italian context, the southern region is furthest from the horizon outlined at the European level, due—among other factors—to an entrepreneurial fabric that struggles to innovate and a low employment rate, particularly among women. Women in the south represent a fundamental resource that the southern production system cannot afford to lose and must succeed in engaging and valorizing through effective policy actions, capable of introducing them into the research production cycle and thus creating innovation, development, and wealth for the country.
Based on these considerations, the project Women and Research in SMEs was launched. Starting from a surveyof southern enterprises engaged in Research and Development, which aims to analyze the employment of these productive entities and identify their critical issues, the project concludes with a Scenario Planning activity that will determine interventions designed to support the development of southern enterprises and increase female participation in the R&D sector.
