A sociologist, his primary research interests concern the integration of the immigrant population, with particular reference to the labor dimension and migration policies. In recent years, his research has focused on the intersection between European Union entry policies and regional integration in the Mediterranean basin. This involves investigating, primarily, the effects of the response given by European Union countries to migration flow management needs on the development and intensification of regional integration processes in the Mediterranean. Particular attention has been paid to the issue of immigrants. Furthermore, the issue of the so-called 2015 summer refugee crisis and its impact on the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) has been addressed. Alongside the social and political analysis of immigration, Italian emigration and emigration policies have also been examined. This analysis is also conducted using the methodologies of historical sociology.
