Professor Emeritus of Sociology of Work at the Faculty of Political Sciences, Sociology, and Communication of the University of Rome – Sapienza. He taught for many years at the University of Naples “Federico II”, where he served as Dean of the Faculty of Sociology. From 2002 to 2009 he was Director of the Institute of Research on Population and Social Policies. His research activity primarily focused on analyzing labor market functioning, with attention to the condition of disadvantaged groups. He also dealt with welfare systems and social policies, studying issues related to the third and fourth age and collaborating with institutions operating in this field. In recent years he was particularly engaged in the study of migration processes, focusing on the one hand on movements in the Mediterranean and migration policies, and on the other hand on the resumption of Italian emigration abroad. The results of this latter research were published by Il Mulino (“Quelli che se ne vanno”). He was a member of the research group coordinated by the University of Milan Bicocca on “L’altra agricoltura: persone e territori”. He was associated with IRPPS – Institute of Research on Population and Social Policies until his death.
