Emeritus Professor of Sociology of Work at the Faculty of Political Science, Sociology, Communication of the University of Rome – Sapienza. He taught for many years at the University of Naples "Federico II", where he was dean of the Faculty of Sociology. From 2002 to 2009 he was director of the Institute for Research on Population and Social Policies. His research activity has mainly concerned the analysis of the functioning of the labor market, with attention to the condition of disadvantaged subjects. He has also dealt with welfare systems and social policies, studying the problems of the third and fourth age and collaborating with institutions operating in this area. In recent years, he has mainly engaged in the study of migratory processes with attention on the one hand to movements in the Mediterranean and to migration policies and on the other to the recovery of Italian emigration abroad. The results of this latest research have just been published by Il Mulino (“Those who leave”).
He is currently a member of the research group coordinated by the University of Milan Bicocca on "The other agriculture: people and territories"
