Population, Gender and Society (POGES) is a research area focused on the study of social inequalities and processes of vulnerability in contemporary societies, with particular attention to the role of gender in shaping social relations, life chances, and access to rights.

Adopting a gender perspective allows for a critical analysis of social stratification and of the institutional, relational, and individual processes through which gender norms are produced, reproduced, and transformed, influencing individual life trajectories.

From an intersectional perspective, gender is examined in relation to other axes of inequality—such as social class, age, disability, and migration background—to better understand how social change may generate new forms of vulnerability or reinforce existing ones, while also opening spaces for renegotiation and active citizenship.

POGES research also explores the interaction between these dynamics and public policies, focusing on how institutional systems regulate and address situations of social risk and vulnerability. In this framework, research activities analyse social protection systems, welfare policies, and local services, with particular attention to multi-level governance, service networks, and policy evaluation.

Main research areas:

  • social and gender inequalities
  • gender-based violence and prevention measures
  • social protection and welfare policies
  • governance of local services and policy evaluation
POGES adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analyses based on official statistics and survey data with qualitative methodologies such as in-depth interviews, focus groups, case studies, and policy analysis. This approach enables the integration of structural, institutional, and biographical dimensions, contributing to both scientific knowledge and evidence-informed policymaking.
