Statistics at CNR in Service of the Country

The Institute of Applied Mathematics and Information Technologies of the National Research Council (CNR IMATI), in collaboration with the Italian Statistical Society, as part of the initiatives preceding the 2022 Statistics Festival, is organizing an event on July 5, 2022 entitled:

The event has two main objectives:

  • on one hand, it aims to demonstrate, especially to the national statistical community, how CNR develops and applies statistical methodologies that contribute not only to the advancement of knowledge but also, and perhaps above all, to addressing and solving problems and challenges facing our country;
  • on the other hand, the event aims to inform the CNR scientific community about the statistical work carried out by their colleagues, while also seeking to foster collaborations and knowledge exchange.

The twelve researchers, at different career levels, have diverse scientific backgrounds and work in different institutes but share in common the use and/or development of statistical methodologies in their research.

The event aims precisely to highlight this commonality of interests despite the diversity and, hopefully, to foster future collaborations as well as greater awareness of the activities carried out by CNR researchers (with the collaboration of all staff) in service of the country.

Query Processing of Geosocial Data in Location-Based Social Networks

Query Processing of Geosocial Data in Location-Based Social Networks

Arianna D’Ulizia, Fernando Ferri, and Patrizia Grifoni have published an article in the prestigious journal MDPI – Academic Open Access Publishing titled: Query Processing of Geosocial Data in Location-Based Social Networks

“…The increasing use of social media and the recent advances in geo-positioning technologies have produced a great amount of geosocial data, consisting of spatial, textual, and social information, to be managed and queried. In this paper, we focus on the issue of query processing by providing a systematic literature review of geosocial data representations, query processing methods, and evaluation approaches published over the last two decades (2000–2020). The result of our analysis shows the categories of geosocial queries proposed by the surveyed studies, the query primitives and the kind of access method used to retrieve the result of the queries, the common evaluation metrics and datasets used to evaluate the performance of the query processing methods, and the main open challenges that should be faced in the near future. Due to the ongoing interest in this research topic, the results of this survey are valuable to many researchers and practitioners by gaining an in-depth understanding of the geosocial querying process and its applications and possible future perspectives…”

The challenges of anti-Gypsyism

The challenges of anti-Gypsyism

Sandro Turcio has published an article titled “The challenges of anti-Gypsyism” on Welfare Post, the CNR-IRPPS blog.

“…Approximately 150,000-180,000 Roma, Sinti, and Caminanti (RSC) live in Italy, accounting for no more than 0.3% of the Italian population. This is one of the lowest percentages in Europe: if we were like Bulgaria or Macedonia, there would be about 6 million Roma. In Europe, the Romani population is estimated at 11.3 million people, while in the European Union, the average estimate is 6.2 million people, equal to approximately 1.2% of the population.”
