Short Bio
Maurizio Atzeni divides his time between Argentina and Chile, working as a researcher at CEIL/CONICET and as a Professor of Industrial Relations at the Alberto Hurtado University. His research revolves around two main axes. The first is the study of the nature and dynamics of labour conflict and forms of collective organization of workers. It covers a wide range of cases (the automotive industry, the delivery industry in pre- and post-digitalization contexts, self-managed factories and cooperatives, the informal labour market) to map conflicts and forms of work organization. A second research axis studies the forms of work produced on the basis of contemporary developments in capitalism. This axis refers to a global and interdisciplinary dimension that has been pursued in particular in the publications of the Handbook of the Global Political Economy of Work and previously in Workers and Labour in a Globalised Capitalism. In 2022, he founded the international summer school, LabourTransfer, in Sardinia, which combines the academic world of labour studies with trade union activism and territorial development.

The Role of Post-Normal Science in Contemporary Society

What role does science assume when faced with uncertain scientific facts, urgent decisions, high stakes, and conflicting values?
These questions will be at the center of reflection by scholars in the first meeting of the Officina project in 2023.

The meeting will be held on February 21 at the Faculty of Sociology of the University of Tor Vergata at 11:00 AM.
It will be possible to follow the live stream at the link bit.ly/3S52qgn.

Silvio Funtowicz, a philosopher who developed—together with Jerry Ravetz—the concept of post-normal science, will participate. This concept proposes a new model of scientific inquiry and of the relationship between science, society, and political decision-makers in situations characterized by uncertainty and urgency.

Speakers will also include: Bruna De Marchi, an expert in the sociology of risk; Valentina Tudisca and Claudia Pennacchiotti, IRPPS researchers; and Michela Mayer, from the Italian Association for Sustainability Science.

The meeting will be moderated by scholars Claudia Hassan, University of Tor Vergata, and Adriana Valente, IRPPS, and will be preceded by greetings from the IRPPS Director, Mario Paolucci, and the Director of the SPFS Department, Lucia Ceci.

Recover Together Recover Strong

July 19 – 21, 2022

Sumatra

From July 19 to 21, the Women 20 summit will meet in Sumatra, Indonesia. This is an Engagement Group of the G20, representing the world’s 20 most industrialized countries, organized around the slogan used by Indonesia for the G20: Recover Together, Recover Stronger.

Dr. Sveva Avveduto from the CNR will lead the Italian delegation. The W20 group, which addresses all G20 themes from a female perspective, will present the results of a year’s work in the form of a Communiqué. This will be delivered to the G20 at the end of the Summit so that world leaders can incorporate gender equality and female empowerment into the conclusions of the G20 to be held in November.

The W20 has identified five priority areas, the first concerning non-discrimination and equality in every sector—from education to work, entrepreneurship, health, technology, and energy—as well as in public and private life.

In particular, world leaders are asked to take concrete measures to close the gender pay gap. An important area is education for boys and girls, aimed at eliminating gender stereotypes and the difficulties girls face in pursuing scientific studies and careers.
